  7.     All the right protocol was observed. KURT MASUR, making
  8. his first appearance as music director of the New York
  9. Philharmonic (succeeding Zubin Mehta), rightly judged that the
  10. occasion was more ceremonial than musical. So the German maestro
  11. began with a polite bow to America, conducting two short pieces
  12. by contemporary composer John Adams and a set of Old American
  13. Songs by Aaron Copland (winningly sung by baritone Thomas
  14. Hampson). Then Masur, who has led Leipzig's venerable Gewandhaus
  15. Orchestra since 1970, reached under his tailcoat and produced
  16. his own credential: an authoritative, warmly expressive version
  17. of Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 7. This served to remind the
  18. Lincoln Center faithful (and a national TV audience) that his
  19. roots lie deep in the European romantic tradition. Clearly
  20. Masur, 64, a one-man back-to-basics movement, intends to move
  21. the brilliant, erratic, often fractious Philharmonic more into
  22. line with that tradition -- diplomatically, of course. Judging
  23. from the way the musicians played for him, they seem eager to
  24. get there.
